Once your little one starts solids around six months — with your paediatrician approval — simple homemade purees set the tone for healthy eating habits.

1. Sweet potato and banana mash

Steam half a sweet potato, mash with half a ripe banana. Naturally sweet, rich in fibre and vitamin A.

2. Avocado and yoghurt mash

Half an avocado mashed with two tablespoons of plain full-fat yoghurt. Healthy fats and probiotics in one bowl.

3. Ndengu (green gram) puree

Cook ndengu until very soft, blend with a little of the cooking liquid. A great Kenyan source of protein and iron.

4. Carrot and pumpkin puree

Steam equal parts carrot and pumpkin, blend smooth. Add a teaspoon of olive oil for vitamin absorption.

5. Soft-cooked oatmeal

Cook plain oats with breast milk or formula until creamy. Never add sugar or honey before age one.
